Spring Garden Update 3/14/14

Romaine Lettuce, Carrots, Green Onions

Potatoes in pots
We are anxiously awaiting the warmer weather to come to North Florida.  Our last frost date is March 22 and it can't get here soon enough for me.

I have many things thriving in the raised beds that are frost tolerant thank goodness as we just had a light frost a few nights ago.

The potatoes in pots were a bit damaged from the hard frost we had a few weeks ago but seem to have recovered and are growing nicely.

The onions, shallots and garlic are really taking off and I am hoping for a big harvest.  I had a bunch of onion sets left over so I decided to plant them as they were sprouting in the bags.  I will have lots of onions hopefully!

The green house turned out to be the best investment of all!  I am so pleased with how the seedlings are doing, even with the cold weather we've had.  On the cold nights, I put a drop light in it and it keeps it toasty warm, the plants just love it.

Shallots
So far I have tomatoes, cucumbers, sunflowers, peppers, eggplant, zuchinni, zinnea, nastursiams, and more growing from seed in the green house.  The soil temperature must be at least 60 degrees or higher for these.  When I checked the soil temperature this morning, it was barely 52.  We need warmer days to heat the soil before any of these can go in the ground.  I am hoping by March 22nd, I can start transplanting.. Yay!!

Happy Spring Gardening!!!

WARMTH IS COMING - ONIONS, POTATOES, AND MORE

Garlic coming up

RED ONION

RADISHES
I took a few photos today while the sun was shining and so pretty outside.  Still a bit cold to really start planting anything else outside.
The garlic to the left is coming up really well.
CARROTS GROWING IN LARGE POT

SHALLOTS
I also read that Garlic is a great insect repellent and will ward off many damaging bugs.  The rabbits are not fond of it either.

RED POTATOES SPROUTING

SUGAR SNAP PEAS

KALE just for Janelle

The same applies for any onions also.  They are great for keeping pest away.  These Red Onions are looking good and growing so fast!!

I planted radishes again, not as many as last year but we aren't that fond of them so this square should be plenty.  They are so prolific and are great in salads for sure!

I harvested a few carrots that were planted late last year.  I never thinned out a few of the squares so a lot of the carrots were deformed or very small. Still, I harvested enough to add to my beef stew.... yummy!

I've never tried growing shallots before, so far what I've planted are coming up beautifully.  Shallots are similar to onions but very mild.  Great for cooking with different types of veggies, especially green beans.

The sweet onions are slow growing so far, not nearly as tall as the others.

GARDEN UPDATE - NEW GREENHOUSE - 2/2/14

It's been an exciting few weeks here as I've been very anxious to get the spring garden going.   First I started some seeds indoors using seed starting trays which I put in large aluminum pans and placed in our upstairs window.  They were covered with plastic lids as protection from our cats who love to dig in the dirt and eat any seedlings that appear.  Unfortunately, we had a week of very cold, freezing weather making it almost impossible for any of the seeds to germinate.  Out of desperation, I purchased a couple of seed heating mats from Amazon.com and the seeds started to sprout...... Later that week I had to also purchase a thermostat to control the temperature as the mats were getting too hot, it really worked well.  After moving the trays to 3 different locations, including the tub in our spare bathroom, I decided I needed a better solution and researched small greenhouses.  I found this one on Amazon and was pleasantly surprised as to the quality and size.  I moved the trays out, closed it up and the very next day, almost all of the seeds had sprouted.  YES!  I absolutely love this thing!   Well worth the investment of 50.00.
You can see how happy the seedlings are
here in this picture.  I am growing a variety of tomatoes including Beefsteak, Brandywine, Roma.  The only eggplant I am growing this year is the Japanese type.  Had very good luck with them last year.
In this tray, there is broccoli, spinach, nasturtium, kale, sunflowers and Saliva.  Kale is a first for me as well as the sunflowers.
I am also trying Zinnias by seed this year, they look so pretty in the garden and are very good companion plants for many types of vegetables.

Cucumbers and Jalapenos are also in this tray.  I had so much luck with peppers last year but have never tried the Jalapenos so hopefully they will do well.
Last year, none of the spinach came up but I am giving it another go this year.  I just love spinach and it would great to eat some fresh out of the garden.  "fingers crossed".

Another first for me are Red Potatoes.  I've done lots of research and found growing them in large pots can be very successful.  Again, being a bit ambitious, I planted them a bit early but to my surprise, they survived the hard frost and are now sprouting in every pot!  How cool would it be to harvest potatoes!!  really looking forward to that!
I purchased a wide variety of onion sets, Red, Sweet, Shallots and garlic and planted them in the Square Foot garden bed.  So far they are coming up and looking really healthy.  I think they really thrive in the cooler weather.
The Kale and Lettuce are starting to sprout also.
Last year, my second planting of lettuce didn't produce at all so I'm hoping to have more luck this time around.
I planted carrots late in the Fall and they seem to have gone into hibernation but are now coming to life.

These are sugar snap peas which again I tried last year with no luck.  These seedlings have survived hard frost and are now looking like they might actually start growing.

FIRST GARDEN BLOG OF THE NEW YEAR!

Mixing Compost, Garden Soil, Peat Moss and Vermeculite
Happy New Year to all!  It was a quiet Fall Season for The Ambitious Gardener.   I believe I needed a break as my Spring and Summer crops kept me hopping.  I loved every minute of it of course.  A very prolific growing season, especially for Beans, Japanese Eggplant, Peppers and Tomatoes.  I learned hard lessons on insect control, blight, root rot and the list goes on and on!
Frame for Frost Protection cover

First, a quick summary on my Fall planting:  The Carrot seeds planted months ago are coming along very slowly but they are looking good.  Green Onion and lettuce are coming up also.  There is also a square with radishes that don't seem to be maturing so they may have to come out.  The Romaine lettuce sprouted but never matured either.

The Broccoli produced a few nice heads, maybe harvested twice from 6 plants.  Cauliflower was a disappointment, however, heads did appear but an early hard frost proved too much for them and they stopped growing and basically rotted.  I don't
think I will try growing Cauliflower again.

My most prolific plants were the peppers.  They just wouldn't stop putting out!  Cowhorns, Red Cherry and Habaneros, had so many of them that I actually did my first canning ever and made hot sauce with the Habenaros.

Anyway, I am SO ready to prepare the garden for spring planting and spending time outside.  I have started mixing soil, cleaning out beds and making plans for what seeds I will attempt to grow this year.  Since I am SO Ambitious and impatient, I decided to put up frost protection covering four
Frost Protection
feet in each bed, sixteen squares each.  It may be a bit early for some seeds but I figure if I provide some protection from the elements, I may get lucky.  Putting it together was very easy and inexpensive.  For each 4 x 4 area, I used 2 - 10' 1/2 " PVC pipe and tied them in the center with cable ties.  Super Simple folks!  I used a 10 x 10 sheet of plastic or 6 mil clear tarp and secured it with 4 spring clamps.  Pretty ambitious right?  :)
Tarp is on and clamped
I am going to try a few new vegetables this year, Potatoes in pots, Kale and possibly artichokes.
My first year, I was very successful with different types of lettuce so I figure Kale should be a breeze and is so good for you!  I've been reading a lot about potatoes and this may be a challenge as I may be starting a bit to early.  Other root crops I'm planting this month are Shallots, Red Onions, yellow onions and garlic.

Spring Clamp to Hold Tarp

I haven't decided if Melons will be on the list this year or not.  They really take up a lot of room, which I don't have.  Corn is also off the list also, live and learn.  Last year I planted so many tomato plants and had numerous problems with them that I've decided to take it easy this year.  Four plants is the max, in pots not in the beds.
